Musician Dave Grohl, frontman of Foo Fighters, recently turned 56. But rather than throw a big bash, the singer opted to spend his birthday helping others. The long-time LA resident joined the horde of volunteers who have devoted their time to wildfire relief, and was seen cooking meals for the non-profit organization Feed the Streets LA.

In a a pair of Instagram stories posted by Feed the Streets LA, Grohl can be seen stirring up a large pot of chili and pushing black food containers down a sidewalk. The latter clip is accompanied by the caption, “Making breakfast and lunch for tomorrow. Distributing dinner tonight for displaced families and inmate firefighters.”

This isn't the first time Grohl has volunteered in this type of way. In March 2023, he helped prepare thousands of meals for people experiencing homelessness. “On one of those wet and cold rainy days we received a text from none other than Dave Grohl (code name: Dolce & Gabana)—he said he heard about what we were doing and wanted to help out,” Feed the Streets LA recounts.

“We threw him into an upcoming activation. He spent 18 hours straight smoking brisket, ribs and pork—with a cooking crew,” the organization explained. “They stayed up all night and into the sunrise. The next day Dolce and his team, exhausted and sleep deprived—packed up the food and drove it to MacArthur Park. All they had to do was drop it off and leave, however they decided to stay and work the line—serve the BBQ with our crew until everyone at the park was fed. If that ain’t a hero we don’t know wtf is.”

According to Feed the Streets, they launched over 75 fire relief food activations since January. “FTS was born out of gratitude for freedom and life—two simple things most people take for granted,” the organization writes, reflecting on the work done by people like Grohl. “The communities that allow us to be of service are the corner stones of the movement. See ya in the streets.”

You can find more information about donating and volunteering by visiting Feed The Street's website. You can also follow the organization on Instagram.

David Lynch, the avant-garde director of films like Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, and Mulholland Drive, as well as the paradigm-shifting TV series Twin Peaks, has died at 78. His influence transcended film, creating a uniquely dark visual narrative language that became known by fellow filmmakers, critics, and fans simply as “Lynchian.” This vision also reached his paintings, books, experiments with music and entrepreneurships.

Lynch’s death was announced by his family on Facebook. “There’s a big hole in the world now that he’s no longer with us,” they wrote. “But, as he would say, ‘Keep your eye on the donut and not on the hole.’ It’s a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies all the way.” While his family didn’t name a cause of death, Lynch announced in 2024 that he that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after a lifetime of smoking. According to Deadline, the director recently took a turn for the worse after having to evacuate his house during the Sunset Fire. In the wake of his passing, it’s only natural to take a look back at his prolific career and the impact he has had and continues to have in film, TV, and the arts as a whole.

Born on January 20, 1946, in Missoula, Montana, Lynch jumped into the movie scene in 1977 with his debut film, Eraserhead. The macabre tone and subject matter turned it into a cult film among the midnight movie circuit. His breakthrough came with The Elephant Man (1980), a dark tale about a sideshow “freak” in Victorian England. This film earned him the first of his four nominations for Best Director at the Academy Awards.

Lynch has long been renowned for his evocative, brooding creative vision, which mixed elements of surrealism with film noir and horror to create experimental narrative structures that inspired audiences to create their own meanings. There doesn’t seem to be an absolute consensus as to what is Lynch's masterpiece—experts are divided between Blue Velvet (1986), a film that challenged the façade of the American Dream of the 80s; Twin Peaks (1990), the haunting TV series that would become a cornerstone for modern prestige television; and Mulholland Drive (2001), a neo-noir mystery that explores the dangerous allure of Hollywood and which earned Lynch the Best Director award at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.

In 2020, the auteur received an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement. A couple of years later, he made his final appearance in a film in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, where he played director John Ford. “I loved David’s films,” Spielberg said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Elephant Man defined him as a singular, visionary dreamer who directed films that felt handmade. The world is going to miss such an original and unique voice. His films have already stood the test of time and they always will.”

Following his death, tributes started pouring in quickly. Movie theaters around the world changed their marquees in his honor, and former collaborators expressed how much Lynch had meant to them.

“It wasn’t just his art that impacted me—his wisdom, humor, and love gave me a special sense of belief in myself I’d never accessed before,” Naomi Watts, one of the stars of Mulholland Drive, wrote on Instagram. “Every moment together felt charged with a presence I’ve rarely seen or known. Probably because, yes, he seemed to live in an altered world, one that I feel beyond lucky to have been a small part of. And David invited all to glimpse into that world through his exquisite storytelling, which elevated cinema and inspired generations of filmmakers across the globe.”

Kyle MacLachlan, who appeared in so many of Lynch’s projects that he became known as his “alter-ego” or his “stand-in,” thanked him for propelling his career, and mourned his dear friend. “What I saw in him was an enigmatic and intuitive man with a creative ocean bursting forth inside of him. He was in touch with something the rest of us wish we could get to,” the actor shared. “While the world has lost a remarkable artist, I’ve lost a dear friend who imagined a future for me and allowed me to travel in worlds I could never have conceived on my own.”

NPR's Tiny Desk is a intimate concert series beloved by music fans. It offers the opportunity to listen to raw, unfiltered performances by some of the world's top musicians. This is particularly alluring when a powerful vocalist gets to play, showcasing their true abilities without any autotune or similar tech. That's why British singer-songwriter Sam Smith thrived in this format, giving a 20-minute show that many wish went on for longer.

The acoustic set was recorded in 2023, when Smith was halfway through their Gloria the Tour headlining concert tour in support of their fourth studio album, Gloria (2023). Despite being only four songs long, the setlist is a career-spanning glimpse. It starts with Smith's breakthrough ballad “Stay With Me,” followed by dance pop hit “How Do You Sleep,” a duet with LaDonna Harley-Peters in “Lay Me Down,” and “Unholy,” a provocative track that earned Smith their latest Grammy.

Smith, who has been in the big leagues of pop music for about a decade, has already won some of the biggest accolades in the industry. They have five Grammy Awards–Best Pop Vocal Album for In the Lonely Hour (2014), Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Stay With Me,” and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance alongside Kim Petras for “Unholy” in 2023. With this, they are the first openly non-binary musician to win a Grammy Award. Smith also has a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for “Writing's on the Wall,” the theme for the James Bond film Spectre (2015).

The singer has long been lauded for their tremendous vocal range, which ranges from baritone to tenor. This gift is complemented by their profoundly personal songs in a wide range of styles. Smith is no stranger to carrying their heart on their sleeve, showing equal vulnerability when writing about a broken heart with a soaring ballad or openly celebrating their desires with a floor-filling tune.

In 2017, Sony released the critically acclaimed video game Horizon Zero Dawn for PlayStation 4. Through the eyes of the young hunter Aloy, players explore the overgrown ruins of a long-lost civilization and encounter the colossal machines that now roam the world. Given its technological conceit, it’s only fitting that someone attended CES 2025 cosplaying as one of these animatronic creatures.

Rick Galinson, a mechanical FX and animatronics designer based in Los Angeles, engineered an astounding costume of the Watcher to promote Horizon Zero Dawn at the event. With its elongated neck and reptilian legs, the machine resembles a small theropod dinosaur and boasts a massive eye. Galinson’s costume brilliantly brings this futuristic creature to life.

Measuring 13 feet and weighing 73 pounds, the costume is operated by a human performer from the inside. To further enhance its realism, the costume is fully articulated, and features sounds as well as lights. The Watcher was also accompanied by an Aloy cosplayer, who donned an intricate bow-and-arrow and an equally detailed costume.

Horizon Zero Dawn encompasses countless mechanical creatures, but the Watcher is one of the most significant. In fact, it’s the first machine the player meets in Horizon, and it serves a critical role in Aloy’s development as a machine hunter. In the popular video game, a 6-year-old Aloy is introduced to Watchers by her guardian, Rost, in an effort to learn how to avoid and ambush machines. As she grows up, Watchers are one of Aloy’s main targets for practicing machine combat.

Cosplaying is an integral part of many video-game and pop-culture communities, but those involving animatronics and advanced mechanics are far less common. It’s precisely this fact that makes Galinson’s Watcher such an impressive tribute to the beloved Horizon Zero Dawn.

Horizon Zero Dawn, a beloved video game released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, features colossal machines that roam and rule the world in the far future.

At CES 2025, a mechanical FX and animatronics designer brought the Watcher, one of the creatures from the game, to life through inventive cosplay.

Singer Post Malone had a very busy year. In 2024, he performed at the Super Bowl; released his sixth studio album, F-1 Trillion; and appeared in two of the most successful records of the year, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter and Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department. To close out the year, the performer appeared to pay it forward by changing a woman's life for the better. On Christmas, Post Malone left a $20,000 tip for a single mother working as a bartender at a dive bar in Houston.

Renee Brown, the bartender who got the generous donation, recounted the experience on Instagram. “Going into work Christmas Eve I was so sad I had to leave baby girl to go to work,” she said. It was the first time she wouldn't be at home to spend the holiday with her 9-year-old daughter, Iliana. The woman, who who works two jobs to make ends meet, lamented not getting to watch movies and bake cookies with her child. She then says, “[I was] oblivious that god would send me a Christmas miracle.”

During her late night shift at The Railyard, she caught wind that Post Malone was there with his friends. “I initially didn’t realize he was there until one of my coworkers from my second job came inside and told me that Austin [Post Malone] was outside on the patio,” Brown told Mayhem Magazine. “I thought he was kidding with me at first, then I kept seeing people go outside [and] I kept making drinks for like 30 minutes before curiosity got the best of me, and lo and behold, he was there.”

Aware that the singer may have been looking to lay low, Brown went out of her way to make sure he was comfortable. “I told all my regulars not to be weird and bug him as it’s a neighborhood dive bar, and I’m sure he picked a place like that to feel a sense of normalcy,” she says. Despite his lowkey patronage, Brown shares that Post Malone's visit lifted everyone's spirits. “It was amazing to see everyone so happy and seeing how kind he was to all the people that spend their days with me on the regular.”

As Brown got ready for closing time and the end of her late night shift, it was already Christmas morning. When Post Malone asked for his check, he didn't have one as his friends and other patrons had covered it. Still, the singer told Brown to charge him for something so he could tip her. “So he asked me to ring him up for a penny or anything, so I did. I continued my close and collected all my checks and started to enter my tips. Then I got to his. It was a tip for 20,000 dollars,” she recalls. “I immediately broke down crying.” Luckily, the mother got a chance to thank the singer in person before he left.

Brown shared that she plans to use the money to pay off rent and save a bit to hopefully open a business that allows her to spend more time with her daughter. “This is hands down the most humble personable celebrity I’ve had the pleasure of meeting,” the bartender says. “He changed my life on Christmas f—— Eve and I will forever be grateful. Thank you so much Austin.”

The 2025 Golden Globes Awards took place earlier this week, celebrating the standout film and tv productions of 2024. Among the highlights was The Substance, a gripping film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley that leaves a lasting impression long after the credits roll. Moore won Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her captivating performance as celebrity aerobics instructor Elisabeth Sparkle—an incredible milestone and, surprisingly, the first acting award win of her 45-year career.

The Substance takes a bold, unflinching look at the entertainment industry’s obsession with female youth and beauty, and Moore’s performance perfectly captures the raw horror of how women are often objectified and left with low self-esteem. Moore delivered a moving speech while accepting her well-deserved award, reflecting on her own experiences in the film industry and the challenges many women face within it.

“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress, and at that time, I made that mean that this [award] wasn’t something that I was allowed to have,” Moore bravely said at the beginning of her speech. “[It meant] that I could do movies that were successful and that made a lot of money but that I couldn’t be acknowledged, and I believed that. That corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I had already done what I was supposed to do.”

She continued, “I was at kind of a low point, and then I had this magical, bold, courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers script come across my desk called The Substance, and the universe told me that you’re not done. I am so grateful to Coralie [Fargeat] for trusting me to step in and play.”

Moore went on to deliver an empowering message, reinforcing the film’s poignant message: “I’ll just leave you with one thing that I think this movie is imparting. In those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough or basically just not enough—I had a woman say to me, just know, you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.”

She ended on a heartfelt note, saying, “So today I celebrate this as a marker of my wholeness and of the love that is driving me and for the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong.”

Check out the full speech below. We can’t wait to see what the Moore does next!

John Coltrane’s ‘Circle of Tones’ Illustration Beautifully Visualizes the Connections Between Mathematics and Music
The Coltrane Circle

John Coltrane's reinterpretation of the circle of fifths. The diagram is now known as “The Coltrane Circle” or “Coltrane’s Circle of Tones.”

Pythagoras once claimed that “there is geometry in the humming of the strings, and there is music in the spacing of the spheres.” The accomplished jazz saxophonist, bandleader, and composer John Coltrane thought similarly.

In 1967, Coltrane presented a geometric drawing to fellow saxophonist and professor Yusef Lateef. The drawing seemed to resemble a clock, featuring a circular pattern that connected musical notes with neatly spaced lines. The diagram would come to be known as “The Coltrane Circle” or “Coltrane’s Circle of Tones.”

The Coltrane Circle offers a compelling visualization of how mathematics and music interact, and has inspired countless essays on musical geometry. Based on the circle of fifths, Coltrane’s interpretation depicts the 12 semitones of the chromatic scale, mapping their notations, relative shades, and relationships to one another. Though portraying a recognizable principle in music theory, the drawing is unique in how it presents this information.

Most likely designed during in-depth studies of Albert Einstein’s work as well as Indian music, the Coltrane Circle retains an almost mystical composition despite its theoretical underpinnings. The lines that cut through the drawing’s interconnected circles create a star pattern in the center, beautifully merging art and music theory. For clarinetist Arun Ghosh, Coltrane’s Circle embodied a “musical system connected with the Divine.” Ghosh even commented that it “feels quite Islamic to me.”

The drawing, however, also reveals Coltrane’s preoccupation with physics and science. In his book The Jazz of Physics, physicist and saxophonist Stephon Alexander maintained that Coltrane was guided by the “same geometric principle that motivated Einstein’s” quantum theory. Coltrane was also known to discuss Einstein’s work frequently, to the extent that he mentioned to musician David Amram that he was “trying to do something like that in music.”

In these ways, the Coltrane Circle clearly demonstrates how intertwined music, spirituality, geometry, and mathematics can be. It also supports Coltrane’s own claim: “My music is the spiritual expression of what I am: my faith, my knowledge, and my being.”

Renowned jazz musician John Coltrane beautifully mapped the relationship between music and mathematics with his “Coltrane Circle.”

Soprano Pretty Yende Delivers Thrilling Rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ During the Reopening of Notre-Dame

The reopening of Notre-Dame is one of the most exciting things to take place in Paris in 2024—other than the Olympics. To mark the occasion, a star-studded ceremony and concert took place at the recently restored cathedral. Among the performers, one notable voice offered a moment for the ages. South African soprano Pretty Yende performed a breathtaking solo rendition of “Amazing Grace” before being joined by a sweeping orchestral arrangement.

Yende performed the first verse a cappella, as her voice echoed through Notre-Dame thanks to the cavernous cathedral's acoustics. The soprano was then backed by a soft harp, followed a sweeping accompaniment from the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, which also performed Beethoven’s Symphony No.5, under the baton of Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel.

The soprano, who also performed at the coronation of King Charles III in Westminster Abbey, describes her performance as “a divine moment that still heavily resonates in every fiber of my being singing ‘Amazing Grace' on this monumental night in the inner-court of Notre Dame.”

Yende's voice turned “Amazing Grace” into an uplifting hymn—one that shares a sense of overcoming “dangers, toils, and snares” and finding the light at the end. Her performance resonated with a community that saw one their most beloved landmarks burn down five years ago, and long wondered if it could ever be restored to its former glory.

The South African soprano revealed that Dudamel let her change the arrangement a few seconds before their rehearsal, thanking him for his tenderness and support. “Suggesting starting with just the voice, adding the harp to follow up and join right after leading to the bloom of the orchestra’s impeccable sound. The intention was to focus on the each and every heart that would hear the call of the Amazing Grace,” Yende shares. “It is abundant, available for all. Communion, fellowship, peace, joy, a celebratory resurrection and a new leaf of life for our lady Notre Dame in the heart of Paris.”

Watch World-Famous Pianist Lang Lang’s Breathtaking Performance in Notre-Dame

To mark the exciting reopening of Notre-Dame, a concert featuring some of the top classical musicians in the world took place at the cathedral. Among the virtuosos that performed was Lang Lang, widely regarded as one of the best pianists alive. Joined by legendary conductor Gustavo Dudamel and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Lang Lang delivered a breathtaking performance of the final movement of Camille Saint-Saëns’ “Second Piano Concerto.”

The choice of the musical piece ties back to the long history between the French capital and its beloved cathedral. Saint-Saëns was a born and raised Parisian prodigy that charmed local audiences with his vibrant compositions, and even had a 20-year stint as a church organist.

The Second Piano Concerto is described as requiring incredible skill due to the fast-paced nature of the music. The talented Lang Lang threw himself into the performance, delivering a precise but heartfelt interpretation. The Chinese pianist is no stranger to the work of Saint-Saëns, as he released an entire album performing music by the French composer earlier this year. Aptly titled Saint-Saëns, it includes the same Second Piano Concerto he played in Notre-Dame—a composition he has previously referred to as a “magnificent but underrated Romantic masterpiece.”

“This weekend, I had the privilege of performing with the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra and @gustavodudamel to celebrate the re-opening of Notre Dame in Paris,” the pianist wrote on Instagram, “I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of this historic moment.”

Mariah Carey's “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” has dominated seasonal playlists since its release in 1994. Although this has earned her the nickname of “The Queen of Christmas,” her reign is much bigger than just that. This year, as her holiday tune returned to the top of the charts, Carey broke yet another record—the pop singer has reached the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 20  different years.

While younger generations may associate Carey with her Christmas hit, she has had a long career full of hits. Having ruled the charts in 1990-2000, 2005-06, 2008, and 2019-24, her success goes well beyond “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” In the 90s, she first landed on the top spot for songs such as “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “I’ll Be There,” and “Always Be My Baby.” Fast forward to the aughts, when Carey ruled the airwaves with “We Belong Together,” “Don’t Forget About Us,” and “Touch My Body.”

Much to the surprise of the public, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” didn't become a No. 1 hit until 2019, which was 25 years after its original release. And it only reached the top 10 two years prior. Since then, it has spent 15 weeks total at the top of the charts throughout six consecutive holiday seasons. It was the No. 1 song in 2019 for three weeks, two in 2020, three in 2021, four in 2022—it's longest streak so far—two in 2023, and one so far in 2024.

“Last night on stage in Raleigh, North Carolina, I found out that ‘All I Want For Christmas Is You’ returned to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100,” Carey posted on Instagram, alongside a video of her twins, Moroccan and Monroe, giving her some flowers. “I couldn’t have dreamed of a better time or place to celebrate the news than on stage with my amazing fans, my kids and my #Christmastime tour family. I love you and am so grateful to you all.”

With this, Carey extends her lead among soloists with the most weeks in the No.1 spot of the Billboard Hot 100. Paul McCartney (including his songs with Wings), Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Beyonce trail behind her, having been in the No.1 in 10 separate years. As for individual songs, Carey has placed 19 tracks at the top—just one away from the Beatles’ record of 20. To round out her success, Carey has become the first artist to have been at No. 1 on the chart in four distinct decades (1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s).

If you love Mariah Carey and wouldn't mind contributing to her record-breaking streak, you can stream “All I Want for Christmas Is you” on YouTube below.
