Dogs are incredibly smart creatures, especially when it comes to matters of life and death. A mom dog recently caught on video in Turkey is the perfect example of this. The pooch was seen carrying her hypothermic puppy in her mouth to bring it to the Beylikduzu Alfa Veterinary Clinic in Istanbul, where the little dog was immediately treated by doctors in order to save its life.

It all started when a good samaritan spotted a lonely and sick pooch, which happened to be one of the mom dog's pups. As though she was fully aware that little doggies could get help at the vet, she grabbed her other pup, which was hypothermic, and carried it to the veterinarian's doorstep.

“Yesterday was a day when the saying ‘Living is a hope' came to life,” the veterinarian team wrote on Instagram. “This beautiful mother dog asked for help from our clinic with her puppy that was about to freeze to death in its mouth… Our struggle to keep the puppy alive started when we realized that the puppy's heart was beating.”

The vets allowed the concerned mom dog to be by her puppies' side as they were treated. It is reported that the mom dog also brought in a third puppy, which sadly didn't survive. Veterinarian Baturay Oğan told The Dodo that it appears that she had given birth a few weeks before, but someone had taken her away to get her spayed, causing the puppies to become hypothermic, as mom wasn't around to keep them warm.

To keep the mom dog and her pups—the two surviving dogs from a litter of six—safe from the cold and danger, the clinic has announced that they'll take care of them. “Their health is good now,” Oğan said. “Their mother is in good condition. She is a bit weak, but we feed her intensively. The mother dog and the puppies are staying with us.”

Los Angeles is continuing to battle the worst wildfires ever recorded in the area. Luckily, some inspiring figures have appeared in the face of tragedy. A video captured by ABC's Joey Ybarra shows a firefighter comforting a dog while he sprays water with a hose to put out the fire in a burning house in the Altadena area. Not only did the clip capture a tender moment in the midst of a catastrophe, but it also led to the safe rescue of a clearly traumatized dog.

The video shows the pooch, named Max, wandering around a neighborhood that is being consumed by the Eaton fire. Upon running into a firefighter, Max can be seen sticking close to the first responder who calmly scratches the pup's head while expertly maneuvering a heavy hose with his other hand, only taking his eyes away from the fire to further reassure the dog.

Ybarra shared later on in an Instagram comment that the dog had been rescued by a good samaritan, and while the pooch was scared and distraught, it was safe. The hero in question is dog trainer Christopher Abkarian, owner of the Whittier Dog Club, who has devoted himself to rescuing dogs in need over the last few days. “I rescued this dog today!” he says in a comment. “He is in my facility. I ran into the property to grab him.”

Abkarian shared the race to rescue Max through a series of Instagram stories. When he arrived, the pooch was hiding in the corner of a lawn next to a house that was burning down. The dog trainer said that Max was scared and covered in soot. Abkarian then drove Max to safety, and posted a video update showing him enjoying some treats. While the dog had some breathing issues due to the smoke, he is doing much better now. It was also revealed that the dog had run in fear, but his humans were okay and are preparing for his return. For now, Abkarian will look after Max while they get back on their feet.

The dog trainer also offered his help to the local community, not only by rescuing pets in need from danger, but also by providing pet boarding to those who had lost their homes to the fire. Abkarian also called for people to have compassion for the animals going through this tragedy, as it may be even more confusing for them, and also quite dangerous to their health.

If you're a dog parent, you know this scene all too well—you're on a walk with your pup and they suddenly stop to sniff something. Those in a rush may find it annoying, but there's much more to it than your dog being easily distracted—it's vital for their wellbeing. Not only does sniffing help your dog learn about their environment, but it also keeps them happy and sharp.

The canine sense of smell is much more powerful than ours. Dogs' noses have up to 300 million scent receptors, an incredible fifty times more than the six million humans possess. On top of that, dogs sniff five to 10 times per second, something we only do once every 1.5 seconds. As such, dogs’ noses are the primary way in which they navigate their environment, making it critical for them to take their time to sniff around.

“Imagine someone taking you to an art gallery, then blindfolding you. You wouldn’t get much out of it, would you? I imagine that’s how it is for dogs that are rushed along on walks without the opportunity to stop and sniff,” professional dog trainer and veterinary technician Staci Lemke tells American Kennel Club. That's why she recommends “sniff-centric walks” where dogs can gather and process information about their surroundings.

Making smell the main element of a walk—rather than exercise or potty time—has some benefits. First, it's great for putting their brain to work and fighting boredom, as they put effort in processing the information they've gathered. This will actually tire them more than a walk where sniffing is kept to a minimum. Also, since smell is one of the main ways dogs acquire knowledge, they are being updated about what's going on around them while sniffing. As their curiosity is eased by checking out everything through smell, they'll feel fulfilled and more relaxed.

Sniff walks are especially important for city dogs without yards and anxious pups who may benefit from making sure an area is safe. As pets are usually subject to their human's schedule and space, Lemke sees a “sniff-centric walk” as a calming opportunity for dogs to unwind. Letting your pet set the rhythm may release mood-boosting dopamine in their brains. “If we can find a safe place where these dogs can let their guard down and explore using their noses, it can greatly reduce the amount of stress in their lives,” says Lemke.

While not all walks have to be dictated by a sniff-loving pooch, they can greatly benefit from them. Should you and your dog give it a try, Lemke recommends fitting them with a harness and long line (rather than a retractable leash) and looking for a location with a lot of grass, trees, and bushes to pique their interest. Ultimately, the most important thing is to remind yourself who the walk is for, and to be patient while your pet examines the area. After all, this is the way they make sense of the world, and by letting them sniff, you're truly letting your dog be a dog.

The confusing images were posted by Vinci DeLaunc to Reddit, and they depict his brother's pet dog. “She really looks like that 24/7 from my height,” DeLaunc wrote on Reddit. “She looks like one giant eye all the time. My brother has to put a scarf on her to break the illusion.”

Apparently, the dog's bewildering looks match her oddball demeanor. “It's really jarring irl because her claws constantly tap the floor, she's not verbal, doesn't bark and just roams around the house,” DeLaunc added. “You either see a black ball with one white eye, or a black ball with a pink butthole.”

Of course, the pictures of this peculiar dog were quickly shared elsewhere online, prompting comparisons to a myriad of characters—everything from anime to video games and horror. If only this curious pooch could ever grasp all the double takes and mild jumpscares it has provoked with its unique appearance.

Tennis is arguably one of the most captivating sports to watch, but a recent video proves it's not just humans who get hooked on the action. In an amusing clip from a beach match in Brazil, an adorable, fluffy white dog sits among the spectators, moving its head in perfect sync with the crowd as they follow every shot.

The canine spectator is a Samoyed named Aika, and the video was originally posted by the dog's owner, Mariana.  It was then reposted by the Brazilian Institute of Beach Tennis (IBBT) and went viral. This includes Reddit, where people had a lot of fun sharing their reactions to the clip.

Redditor jerryramone shared the clip with the caption, “The synchronization of these people's faces when watching beach tennis.” While the coordinated head movements of the crowd are pretty amusing, it didn’t take long for Redditors to zero in on the real star of the show. Sootymoon9 commented, “What people? I am looking at the good boy,” while KingBenneth added, “I especially like the look of that white fluffy person.”

The dog’s intense focus and perfectly timed head movements show that the thrill of a tennis match really does transcend species. But perhaps the most impressive part of the entire moment is that the pup manages to stay seated instead of giving in to the urge to chase the ball.

We've seen a fair share of unusual animal friendships over the years. Some are very cute, while some are simply head-scratching. Amazingly, a gang of furry pals caught on camera seems to fit both. A Laika dog—similar to the Siberian Husky—was spotted hanging out with a family of bears in Ust-Kamchatsk, in the Russian region of Kamchatka.

The clip, which was originally shot in 2018, has been attributed to a family who were looking for their missing dog. However, local news outlets reported at the time that the dog in question was a stray puppy known by people in town. The puppy had disappeared into the woods, and locals were concerned that bears had harmed it, but they were wrong. Months after the puppy disappeared, a drone took video footage of the forest, which sits next to a fish processing plant that animals visit to eat leftovers.

The cheerful grey dog can be seen following its adopted family of three bears through the woods. In typical fashion for a young dog, he's frolicking around and circling them with excitement. They seem largely unbothered by their companion, leading experts to believe that the mother bear must have accepted the pup into the family. The dog is so comfortable with its “siblings,” it even plays rough with them, nibbling one of them on the ear as the bear happily tries to pin the dog down.

Some people believe the dog may be annoying the family of bears, which gives a “Can someone pick this guy up, please?” while others revel in the more wholesome read of a long-lasting friendship that transcends species. With some luck, these guys are still having adventures in the woods and enjoying each other's company. You can watch the whole clip below.

Pet photographer Craig Turner-Bullock has merged his love for travel and dogs with a clever project. Dogs of the World sees the New Zealand-based photographer documenting different dog breeds in their homelands. What started as a coincidence while traveling has now transformed into visits to 20 countries, over 50 cities, images of 60 beloved dog breeds, and, now, a book.

Dogs of the World began when he happened to photograph a French bulldog in Paris, a pit bull in New York, and a corgi in London. Realizing that he had the beginnings of something special, Turner-Bullock began actively seeking out breeds to create Dogs of the World.

“Some of the dogs have been photographed in the exact places the breeds were founded, like meeting dandy Dinmont terriers at Bowhill House in Scotland,” he shares. “Others are in iconic locations in their country of origin, and occasionally, I’ve used a little creative license to photograph them in places they’ve become strongly connected to.”

For example, he chose London for corgis due to their connection to Queen Elizabeth II, but the breed actually has its roots in Wales. Similarly, while the Australian shepherd is a breed created in the United States, Turner-Bullock chose to photograph herding dogs in Australia as an homage to their ancestors.

“In the case of dogs like the Australian Shepherd, which was created and first recognized in the USA, they got their name after some of the collies used in their creation were imported from Australia,” he told PetaPixel. “I photographed them in Australia, seeing as that was their namesake country.”

Turner-Bullock recently ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for his Dogs of the World   book, which he hopes to have in readers' hands by December 2025. Prior to that, he has plans to fit in a few more photoshoots in order to end up with 80 to 90 breeds in the book.

“I’m excited to photograph the Indian Ghost Hound and the Japanese Shiba Inu and Akita in the early part of 2025,” he tells My Modern Met. “There are a couple of breeds I really hope to add to the book, and I have rough plans to capture those; the Dalmatian in Croatia and in Tibet, the humongous Tibetan Mastiff.”

While current events make a few breeds, such as the Russian Borzoi and Samoyed, off limits, plenty of others remain left to capture. Those include many of the breeds with their roots in Germany—German Shepherd, Boxer, Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Doberman, and Dachshund. In fact, Turner-Bullock hopes to be able to make a return trip to Germany to document some more of these breeds.

Much pet photography is linked to studio portraits, but Tuner-Bullock hopes that his artistic work not only honors the heritage of these breeds, but also inspires the public to think about the wonderful diversity in the world.

Personally, for Turner-Bullock the book is the culmination of a decade of work. Having poured his heart into the series, from setting up logistics to connecting with dogs owners, each image is connected to a memory. “In all honesty, every one is special, pushed my creative skills, made me need to find solutions to work in extremes of weather, or connect with the dog differently, and they will all remain with me forever.”

In 2023, an adorable sight appeared on ESPN's college football broadcasts—a cheerful golden retriever named Ben. As analyst Kirk Herbstreit‘s emotional service animal, the pair traveled the country together, melting the hearts of those at the games and those following from home. Sadly, Ben recently passed away due to cancer complications. Tributes quickly started pouring in, with the most powerful one being a montage prepared by Herbstreit, who got choked up when it was introduced during a live broadcast.

While Herbstreit and Ben had been together for a decade, the pair only started traveling together in the last year. Ben quickly became a fan favorite for his calming and happy presence. After sharing updates about Ben's declining health, Herbstreit used social media to announce on November 7 that the dog had passed away.

Herbstreit posted his tribute to X (formerly Twitter), reflecting on his emotions during the broadcast in the caption. “I’m sorry I couldn’t properly lead to this beautiful tribute the @CollegeGameDay put together,” he wrote. In the video, the analyst's co-anchors share how special the dog was, as they comfort a crying Herbstreit.

“Dogs are known as man's best friend. But what do you call a dog who becomes a nation's best friend? You call him Ben,” Herbstreit says at the beginning of the tribute. The man shares that he first started bringing the pup on his trips to fight the loneliness of hotel rooms. “His warm presence became my anchor to home, making my journeys feel less like wandering and more like belonging,” Herbstreit said. To him, touching Ben's fur, whether at a studio or a stadium, brought him peace.

“Ben wasn’t out here to become a social media star, but he became one just by being himself,” Herbstreit continued. As a testament to Ben's charm, the analyst remembered how the Rose Bowl named him Chief Happiness Officer. “That’s exactly what he did. He made everyone happy, and he did it without even trying. He just wagged that tail or nestled up against strangers like they were family. And that’s what they became,” he said. “Ben didn't care who you were, everyone deserved his love.”

Having touched so many lives, homages to Ben continued in the form of fan art and messages, highlighting Ben's power for bringing together fans from all over the country. “Dogs’ only flaw as a species is that they don’t live long enough, but the warmth they give us that never goes away, so neither will Ben,” Herbstreit concluded the segment as he fought tears. “This man’s best friend, who became America’s best friend.”

Analyst Kirk Herbstreit recently announced the death of his dog Ben, a fan favorite since he began appearing in college football broadcasts.

Man's best friend is being celebrated at the 2024 Dog Photography Awards. Pet photographers from more than 60 different countries entered 1,700 photos across five diverse categories. From animals in action to heartwarming portraits, the winners highlight the diversity and charm of dogs.

Regine Jensen‘s beautiful image Moving in time places a white whippet named Rebelle in a billowing red cape. As it moves across the sand, the canine looks like a superhero proudly walking about after completing a heroic rescue, making it a fitting winner of the Action category. Jane Thomson also places a dog in a narrative but with a touching purpose. Her photo, which won the Dogs & People category, honors the impact animals make as part of a pet therapy program at a children's hospital.

One thing is clear: whether celebrating the power of these dogs or the strong bonds they form with their owners, these images are more than simply photographs. For the owners, they are cherished keepsakes that immortalize the spirit of their pets—pets that often become an important part of their families.
